4th 9 & 11 Freedom
is Coming Rev.
Erik Wikstrom During the 19th century Unitarians were in the forefront of
the Abolition movement in the United States. Yet slavery worldwide did
not end with Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, and abolitionists are needed
as much today as ever. Members of the Emancipation Network will share with
us their challenging--and ultimately inspiring--message. {This Sunday
will also see us welcome our newest members.}
May
11th 9 & 11 Be
Joyful
Cheri Bryan
All of the major world religions encourage and prescribe
that we "be joyful".
Can
we find within ourselves a wellspring of authentic joy? Come
join in our exploration of joy and its reverberations in our lives.
May
17th 1 p.m. SPECIAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING
"The time has come...to talk of many things." We are at a turning point
in the life of our congregation, a crossroads, and we have an opportunity to make
conscious and intentional decisions about who we are and where we're going.
Such times are rarely easy, yet when engaged with honesty, courage, and love they
are invariably magically transformative. So let's take seriously our call
to mutual ministry, our collective ownership of this community, and let's bravely
step into the water together. On Saturday, May 17th at 1 p.m. there will
be a special congregational meeting to continue the conversation our ordained
clergy have begun, looking at who we are, where we are, and where we want to be
going. ALL of our voices are needed, and even those who feel they have "nothing
to say" are needed as active listeners. As the Rumi poem, turned hymn, says,
"Come, come whoever you are." Each of us is needed; all of us are valued; come,
yet again, come.
May 18th
9 & 11 Tending
the Garden
Rev. Erik
Wikstrom Not only has spring sprung so that many of us are in our actual gardens,
but "tending the garden of the soul" is also used by nearly every religious tradition
as an alternative to the image of the spiritual life as a "journey." It's
also an apt description of what we here need to do. Following on the sermons
of April 20th and 27th, and the Congregational Meeting yesterday, we'll look more
closely at what we need to do to keep the garden of FPB healthy and strong.
May 25th 9 & 11 Here We Have Gathered
Rev. Erik Wikstrom First Parish
was gathered in 1700. In those 300+ years we've been through a few things
-- successes and setbacks, both. What can our history teach us about our
future? Come and find out.
